“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.”

~ Bill Copeland

To be a professional athlete, it takes putting on the uniform and going from the stands to the field. If you have not read the past eight parts on how to get big results accomplishing goals, I encourage you to take the time to reflect on them. Let’s jump into the dynamic reasons, WHY GOALS? You may ask, do goals really work? You may wonder where do I start? What if goals actually have tremendous potential? Your life is so important!

“People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going.” ~ Earl Nightingale

Nine Reasons to Consider Goals

Why Goals?

1).  Goals Steer Focus: Think of goals like an active GPS mapping software that actually communicate where you are on the journey? Ever drive on a long road trip and drift to the right and those loud rumble strip vibrations influence you to steer back on course? Goals are a way to create constant feedback to steer you safely to a specific destination. What goals, when complete, will STEER your life and business forward? Consider a TOP Five Goal List!

“You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.”~ Jim Rohn

2). Goals Benchmark Growth: Think of inside an elevator with the illumination of lights designating which floor we are on. We get a sense of peace knowing where we are and if we are going in the right direction. Goals help us with our reference point to know how to adjust, adapt and pivot. Wherever we are on our journey, we can reimagine and take action to rewrite our story by completing the right goals. In a positive context, consider completing goals that add value and help advance you to the next floor of growth. What could you put in place to measure and benchmark your goal progress?

“If a goal is worth having, it’s worth blocking out the time in your day-to-day life necessary to achieve it.” ~ Jill Koenig

3). Goals Expand Capacity: Desire to increase your capacity? Think of a cup with a hole in it? We can over pour but eventually it will recede to that leaky hole. Think of goals as constant feedback to create awareness of where the holes are in our cup. To grow our capacity, we can explore solutions to solve the hole in the cup. First is awareness that the hole exists, then solving the hole. Without these two, burnout can grow. This simple applied key will increase the capacity! Goals can reveal holes in our thinking, mindsets and approaches to allow us to create solutions fostering greater growth. Have you discovered any holes in your cup? How can you solve them to increase your capacity? Take WHOLE action today!

“You measure the size of the accomplishment by the obstacles you have to overcome to reach your goals.” ~ Booker T. Washington

4). Goals Demolish Delay: Active goals fuel your purpose! There is something powerful about completing things! Seeing progress is so invigorating and rewarding. It’s almost contagious in the right direction. Without taking action in any area, we risk apathy and stagnation. If you ever saw a pond on a hot summer day, it can be covered with algae. The river that is moving doesn’t allow the stagnation to grow. Your goals can be ways to feed the river of your life! How could you supercharge your life or business, cutting off delay with your goals?

“The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.” ~Mike Murdock

5). Goals Build Your Future: Think of your active goals like active steps in a staircase! That staircase is taking you somewhere. Goals are like pieces to a puzzle interlocking to create a picture. What are your goals building? Ever put a puzzle piece in the wrong spot and it didn’t quite fit? Maybe you have a goal that the timing or placement needs adjustment. What three to five goals can you work out to begin feeding the momentum for your bigger picture? What does that bigger picture look like?

“A leader takes people where they would never go on their own.” ~ Hans Finzel

6). Goals Get You Started: Are you feeling stuck or uncertain? Maybe you're in the middle of a transition or storm? Simple goals can feed your confidence to light the first match. Consider one goal for today that would light your match so to speak. Our vehicles require a key to start the engine. What one goal in this moment could be a key to start your engine? You may not feel like starting the engine due to inclimate weather or circumstances? I invite you to take a moment and go get that GOAL KEY and warm your engine up.

“What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” ~ Robert H. Schuller

7). Goals Reveal Mindsets: One thing, great scholars agree on all over the world is, “We become what we think about.” Goals that have time constraints and specific parameters can reveal attitudes or limitations in thinking. The gift that a goal can bring is actually a mechanism for character development! It can reveal and with awareness then, we can replace that belief or mindset with a new way of thinking. What mindset will it take for you to complete your top five goals? What book or podcast could you feed that new mindset with?

“You just can’t beat the person who never gives up.” ~ Babe Ruth

8). Goals Measure Growth: I heard it said by many different leaders, “We can only adjust that which we can measure.” Effective goal setting can be set up to grow strength to scale higher heights. I was watching a rock climber scale a rock face about 150 feet high. Their action steps were putting on the gear and taking one step at a time. The goal to get to the top was constantly being measured by the coach on the ground. The climber was receiving constant feedback on adaptability, strength, technique, and the ability to receive direction from his coach. This climber, after accomplishing his goal, was sharing all the discoveries he had personally from this one goal. What simple measuring techniques can you put in place to give you feedback to scale higher heights?

9). Goals Create a Reset: Do you ever get a gut feeling there is more to life and business? Consider updating your goals fueling a reset. If you ever played a team sport, at times they recognize a need for a reset, so they set a different type of goal. For example, if the team is not playing as a team, they set team exercise goals. Ever power off your smartphone for a reset? When it’s turned back on, it seems to work better? Where in your life or business could use a fresh reset? How could you restructure your goals to restart a new alignment and perspective?

“If you’re bored with life – you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things – you don’t have enough goals.” ~ Lou Holtz

You’re Worth Taking Action

No matter what your past has been regarding goals, today is a new day! Whatever season you’re in, consider writing out a top five goal list. Every industry finds great value with goals. Avoid waiting until everything is perfect. Take action and begin. I understand the pain points on the journey but without action many stay stuck. A song was meant to sing, a bell was designed to ring, a light was invented to remove darkness! Now is your time! I want to invite you to create your way to a better day! You got what it takes!
