The Power of Reframing
Did you ever hit a wall with a conflict, problem or event? Are the constraints limiting your ability to resolve or reimagine the possibilities? With the pace of time constraints and constant change, my heart in this blog is to infuse simple and fresh perspectives to reframe your challenges into golden opportunities.
“Our choices are affected by how information is framed. Depending on which qualities are emphasized, identical facts can be more or less appealing.” ~ Josh Madrid
Five Keys to REFRAME the Opportunity:
Reinforce Your Vision/Goals
1). Reinforce:
With every conflict, challenge or constraint, remind yourself and your team of the vision and goals at hand. Reflecting back on every building project I have ever worked on, there has always been conflict, challenges or constraints. Consider reinforcing daily at the start of the day and at lunch, your goals, what’s working and their participation in solutions. The overall vision for what we were building was consistent, but our agility and attitudes influenced the results.
“Positive reinforcement changes behavior for the better, while criticism stabilizes negative behaviors and blocks change.” ~ Virginia Pearce
Reimagine the Solutions and Possibilities
2). Reimagine:
We know there are no two conflicts, challenges or constraints exactly identical. My dad had a way of not looking in the rearview mirror and dwelling on the past when working on job sites. In other words, his ability to stay in solution, to fuel growth with the team’s strength and to see the bigger picture was many times intuitive and allowed him to flow through the day. He dreamed daily with the team and created structure for them to share their ideas throughout the day. This collaborative reimagining maximized results. Consider a collective place to post ideas and solutions fostering constant improvement. Can the team see the vision?
Recalibration of Approach, Application and Assets
3). Recalibration:
A part of reframing is giving yourself and team the opportunity to recalibrate based on new opportunities, technologies and challenges. If you have ever driven on a highway and drifted a bit to the edge, the rumble strips allow the driver to recalibrate the vehicle between the lines. What systems can be put in place to support daily habits that carry the goals? When a conflict, challenge or constraint takes place, what could be put in place to support continued momentum? When my dad was doing exterior painting, many times rotten wood would be discovered. He simply created awareness, a solution and recalibrated the approach and kept moving forward.
“Every sunset is an opportunity to reset.” ~ Richie Norton
Redefine the Meaning of the Opportunity
4). Redefine:
Growing leaders and your business requires the ability to pivot or redirect or redefine the approach based on new data. For example, professional athletes are faced with opponents that are testing their offense/defense. This requires a mindset that has been redefined to think differently. Redefining even what a problem means. The reality is, there is always a critic, negative in the world, and economic adjustments. Consider how to redefine in advance so when they pop their heads, you have options available.
“You can focus on things that are barriers or you can focus on scaling the wall or redefining the problem.” ~ Tim Cook
Refresh with Empowering Inspiration
5). Refresh:
Think of each new day as an opportunity to refresh. A powerful catalyst to refresh your ecosystem is celebrating wins, collaboration in huddles, honoring each other, and acknowledging accomplishments. One way to set the tone for the next day is how the last 15-30 minutes are completed. When building a large custom home, we all pitched in cleaning the entire project at the end of the day and making sure it was safe for curious homeowners. During this time, create synergy in the culture to shower each other with high fives, wins and honoring one another. You may find the team will reproduce this approach. What we feed will grow. Remember, attitudes are contagious.
“Sincere compliments cost nothing and can accomplish much. In any relationship, they are the applause that refreshes.” ~ Steve Goodier
Think of the most magnificent painting; it is enhanced by the right framing. Reframing is a creative capacity to foster continuous growth and solutions despite what curveballs are thrown. Even the greatest baseball players strike out many times, but they get up to bat again. What’s possible when reframing your situation, your team, clients and colleagues? There is a seed of growth hidden in every adversity. Today is your day! You are extraordinary. You got what it takes!
